During office days I sometimes have Radio 3 on in the background – if the task in hand isn’t too brain-taxing and there’s something relatively unobtrusive playing, it seems to help me work.  Currently ‘composer of the week’ is tackling Bruckner and the piece currently playing is an excerpt from Bruckner’s 8th Symphony.  The opening and later passages bear a passing resemblance to parts of ‘Mars’ from Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’ (albeit in a more traditional time signature and with less savagery).  I wonder if there was any musical debt there, conscious or unconscious?
